Operation Smile Vietnam Hosts Conference and Live Demonstration on Microsurgery at No. 108 Central Military Hospital in Hanoi

Hanoi, Vietnam – Leading surgeons and medical professionals from Hanoi and surrounding areas will have the opportunity to attend a unique program sponsored by Operation Smile. The conference agenda includes a series of lectures on Microsurgery, complemented with surgical demonstrations performed by world renowned specialist, Professor Seng-Feng Jeng, from Chang Gung Memorial Hospital in Taiwan. During the conference, Professor Jeng will share his knowledge and expertise with Vietnamese surgeons and residents who are participating from more than 10 hospitals.

Operation Smile supports the Vietnamese medical community it its goals to attain self-sustainability and to take care of more children safely and effectively. Through programs conducted by Operation Smile, such as American Heart Association’s training courses, curriculum workshops, fellowship programs and the annual Physicians’ Training Program, Operation Smile is helping medical professionals around the world learn skills and gain additional knowledge to better serve their communities in the future.

Since 1989, when Vietnam became an Operation Smile partner country, medical volunteers have treated more than 20,000 Vietnamese children throughout the country. Operation Smile Vietnam celebrates its 20th Anniversary this year. Dr. Lam Hoai Phuong, Medical Director of Operation Smile Vietnam, said, “In the past, approximately 70% of medical team member on Vietnam missions were from other countries. Now, about 70% of volunteers are in-country Vietnamese medical professionals. And we hope that in the near future 100% of Operation Smile medical missions will be conducted by Vietnamese medical volunteer teams to bring more smiles to Vietnamese children”.

This program was made possible thanks to the support of the Maxillofacial and Plastic Surgery Department at 108 Military Hospital. Operation Smile also thanks the many surgeons and residents from Hanoi hospitals who spent countless hours organizing the event.
