History of Hanoi Medical University

Hanoi Medical University, which was established in 1902 under a name: Indochina Medico-Pharmaceutical University, was the first university of Indochina. After the establishment of Democratic Republic of Vietnam, Hanoi Pharmacy Medical University had its first opening ceremony of a new school year in an independent country on November 15th, 1945. In 1947, in the mountains and forests of Viet Bac, a small number of staff with patriotism, the teachers and students of Hanoi Medico-Pharmaceutical University built a Medical University of resistance and taught in Vietnamese.

With a long history of 110 years as a leading medical university in the South East Asia, Hanoi Medical University (HMU) has been providing the top quality human resources for the health sector of Vietnam, as well as supporting the establishment of many other universities such as Hue Medical University, Ho Chi Minh Medico-Pharmaceutical University, Thai Nguyen Medical University, Can Tho Medical University, etc.

· 1990s: HMU in bilateral co-operations with many international and regional partners such as France, the United States, Netherlands, Sweden, Australia, Japan, Ireland, Indonesia, etc. in two-way student and young doctor exchange to study and practice in Vietnam and abroad.

In 1954, HMU was relocated in Hanoi and in association with the city doctors continued to build Hanoi Medico-Pharmaceutical University during the Socialist construction in the North.
In 1965, US air forces bombarded thand extended its invasion all over the territory of our country, with the whole country in support of the South, teachers and students of Medical University once rose to resist all over the country, from the North to the South, from Southern fields to Laos fields. Many of them left their lives in the fields such as; Prof. Dang Van Ngu, Dr, Pham Ngoc Thach ... To maintain training, HMU once again had to evacuate to the mountains and forests of Thai Nguyen province.
In 1975, when our country obtained the freedom, Hanoi Medical University, on the one hand, consolidated to develop steadily on the other supported many other medical universities manpower such as; Hue Medical University, Ho Chi Minh Medico-Pharmaceutical University, Thai Nguyen Medical University, Can Tho Medical University...
In 1990s, integrating into the innovation of the country, HMU has motivated in two directions: develop the key specialty medicine such as heart-intervention organs-transplant research, on the other develop research on community health and has bilateral co-operations with almost all the regional countries and others such as France, the United States, Netherlands, Sweden, Australia, Indonesia, and Japan... There were many international symposiums which were held in Hanoi Medical University such as Heart symposium, Kidney-Urology symposium ... Through these symposiums, the prestige of HMU was elevated. Many international research co-operations have been opened. Besides training and sending Vietnamese young doctors to oversea countries to practice, HMU also receive over 50 foreign students from France, Germany, Switzerland, Australia, England ... to stay and practice.
Outstanding achievements: 10 works was awarded Ho Chi Minh Order and 8 ones was awarded National Prize for Scientific Research. And HMU has international co-operation in science-technology and training with many countries in the world.
There are 508 lecturers (32 superior lecturers, 235 official lecturers and 241 teachers); 308 organic cadres ( 170 of Administrative Depts. 138 of teaching Depts.) 32 Professors ( 7 high-ranking specialists); 76 Associate Professors; 170 Scientific Doctors; the number of specialties at university training: 6 ; Postgraduate: 42 with 2419 students and nearly 3000 postgraduate students.
